Little Fears - Role-playing Game

Your sister has been kidnapped and taken to the depths of the Realm of the Demon-Lord Amduscias, who needs the life force of young women to open the Gates of Hades and wreak havoc and destruction upon everything you know and love. It's only you and your ragtag party who are aware of this. Heavily outnumbered you have another problem, everyone else thinks you are being silly, that monsters and demons aren't real.
Then again, you are only eight years old.
Little Fears asks the question;
'What if every single thing you believed as a kid was terrifyingly real; the Bogeyman, The Man with the Sack, but also your imaginary friends'?
In the genre of Survival Horror this game stands out as your character faces the greatest disadvantages, ones that we ourselves suffered as kids, feeling we couldn't control a hostile world.
Besides Monsters, the characters of Little Fears also have to deal with real-life horrors; bullies, abusive teenagers, criminals and other abusive adults. The game still offers a very real possibility of Kids being shot to death, kidnapped or abused.
I offer this game in PDF form as it has been out of print for a long time and copies on eBay are rare and expensive (starting at $150). As a bonus you can listen to the unofficial soundtrack the Industrial Band Janus composed for the German version of the game.

(The Speculative Fiction series is an exercise in narrative merely done to practice my writing skills, the speculative fiction genre has reached history, but not music and it would be fun to imagine; what if Led Zeppelin never recorded Starway to Heaven? What if Grunge never had commercial success?)


Lfm:Today we are speaking with Kurt Cobain, bassist of the legendary Sludge band Melvins. Cobain was so kind as to invite us to his home in Aberdeen, Washington with his wife, Melanie and his three kids. Cobain, now in his forties, tells us about the Seattle scene in the late eighties and late nineties;

KC: I was just a kid carrying the equipment for some friends back then, The Melvins, Boy, was I obsessed with that band! Even though I knew [Crover and Osborn] from high school... I knew I was being silly when I asked him to audition. I was so nervous I even forgot how to play!!! When I asked; "Can I start again?"I knew I was doomed. I went home knowing I would never make it in life, but Buzz, oh, man. He called me to repeat the audition and I made it!!! I don't know what I 'd done! For sure you would find me with my brains sprayed over the fucking wall!! *laughs*

Lfm: You had a chance to work with William S. Burroughs...

KC: The man was larger than life, you know? You read all his books in secret when you were a teen, you know his life story and yet he treats you as if he were no different from you. And yet when he spoke you pondered his every word... Such clarity, I wish I live to be as sensible as he was...We did a single track in 1992... and some years later I was able to work with him again, short before he died...

Lfm: Although your work has gathered a large following you somehow have eluded the mainstream... With Houdini you had a short-lived success at the charts...

KC: Yes, The people at David Geffen were really into new sounds, they had worked with Sonic Youth... I remember there was some people from a major record company that was looking for something else, I remember the guy, he was genuinely sick and tired of the crap MTV was pushing at the time... he seemed really smart, but when he saw me in private and told me that the other members of the band were dragging me down I knew there was no deal possible. We and another band, Soundgarden, were in rotation on MTV for a couple of months... But the glam bands were so aggressive... The powers that be would never take risks with new stuff. We would never translate into merchandise or toys as the other bands did.

Lfm: Or Saturday Morning Cartoons...

KC: They were the worst!!! I sure didn't want to see myself solving mysteries in space!
Mainstream has become increasingly stale... prefab bands had a limit and it was crossed time and time again. The new wave of Gothic Glam and Dark Glam,, just makes me sick... We worked with Brian Warner from Coma White... He used to be in a Glam band, The Spooky Kids, he simply could not take it.. all the executive meddling. His Idea was to combine divas' names with serial killers, but after the fiasco of the Charles Manson Tribute Album by Guns N' Roses... I think it was for the best, Warner and Trent Reznor have made some very interesting music...

Lfm: For the Mainstream you are a one-hit-wonder... Do you resent that?

KC: Not at all!!! I am not sure if I could handle some executives demanding new material, Melvins has given me the opportunity to listen to myself. The short period we were pushed to promote our MTV material was, like, torture. There was all this material we wanted to explore and people just wanted the same tired song from TV...

--Dio N'arap - Sopor Aeternus and The Ensemble of Shadows
Not so much of a cover but an adaptation based on Black Sabbath's Paranoid, changed lyrics and added atmospheric vocals. I would listen to Sopor Aeternus more but I am freaked out by that Anna-Varney person.


--Symptom of the Universe - Metallica
You should always praise someone who happens to interpret his favorite song. It's Metallica (you may have your opinion of them, I don't even listen to them anymore) paying tribute to the Masters of the genre.



13 Sabbath Jam - Eyehategod

Finally, someone understands that Cornucopia has a killer intro, but is a lackluster song. So they take the intro off it in order to introduce Hand of Doom and end with Behind the Wall of Sleep. A great amalgamation of three great songs.


12 Black Sabbath Medley - Candlemass

Why only cover one when you can cover seven for the same price? Begin from Symptom of the Universe, then turn on Sweet Leaf, follow right through Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, use Into the Void to enter to Electric Funeral and finish with Supernaut and the deep riff that started it all from Black Sabbath. Doom doesn't get more epic than this.

11 Iron Man / Sabbath Bloody Sabbath - The Cardigans

What? You dare turn Metal into Britpop??? A largely silent and soothing ballad that tells the story of the metal monster from the future, that's trippy, man!!!

10 Black Sabbath - Amber Asylum

What? You dare turn Metal into Neoclassical? Amber Asylum creates gloomy ambients that would easily fit into funeral doom, but retain that sweetness of spring rain.

9 Heaven and Hell - Solitude Aeturnus

What? You dare cover a song from the Dio years? Rob Lowe demonstrates he belongs to the great voices of Metal alongside Ronnie James Dio. They also make a killer job covering Ozzy Osbourne's No more Tears.

8 Behind The Wall Of Sleep - Static X

Not the best cover in the world, but I admit I have a liking for Static X's brand of brash, young and energetic metal that does not fall into Metalcore.


7 Black Sabbath - Wraith of the Ropes

Again, take the killer intro for Cornucopia to create a dirty and heavy cover of the original Doom masterpiece and lace it with horror movie undertones. The piano takes a lot from John Carpenter's scores.

6 Black Sabbath (From the Satanic Perspective) - Type O Negative

Change the lyrics, but remain true to the original, they decided to be the Devil instead of the victim. Don't you find it funny that the original, which spawned many interesting things, says "Could this be the end?". Instead, they say; "This is just the start!"

5 Snowblind - Evoken

Masters of Funeral Doom Evoken bring their gargantuan weight and special brand of darkness to the original Stoner Doom masterpiece.

4War Pigs - Ozzy Osbourne

Not a cover but a correction, back in the day they could not sing about Black Magic so they renamed their song "Walpurgis" into something more political (early 70's zeitgeist, after all). This is the song restored to its original glory and the lyrics for my taste are much, much better.

3 Hand of Doom - Slayer

They change the coda to something more fitting of a heroin trip, instead of finishing with a whimper they go on an adrenalin stroke.

2 Solitude - Ulver

This version of Solitude is more silent and intimate, more at home in the Shadows of the Sun album. and let's face it; Kristoffer Rygg's voice is much better for the song than Ozzy's

1 Zero the Hero - Cannibal Corpse

No one covers the Ian Gillan era of Sabbath!!!! But this cover is so surprising, the fade-in intro creates an abbatoir-like ambient that Corpsegrinder's vocals are more at home than the original.

Back in the day of dial-up it was the place where us Napster refugees went to discover new music, I still listened to a lot of garbage The New Shins? blechhhh!!! I got Stabat Mater Dolorosa because I was hooked on a play by the same name and I got this jewel. I got to admit that it was hard for me to get Black Metal, but once I did I never regretted it.

Candlemass created a masterpiece of Doom with this song, they dared defy the creators of the genre with a similar named song. Here death is not something to fear, but a release. Mortality is a theme in every song dealing with loneliness.

You might find lots of funeral doom and doom metal in this list , by nature, doom is long, slow and atmospheric. The Industrial entries of the list are based on previous literary works and the Avant-garde entries are plain weird experimentation.

Yes, this is the infamous track where the last twenty minutes is sound of a turntable stylus stuck in the runout groove of a record. Conceived as a soundtrack for a horror film, the concept of death explored is less romantic ad more proper of a Cronenberg Body horror film.

A slow and heavy riff in a nocturnal ambient, a doom melody that gives way to a piano intermezzo before returning to the death growls, the true essence of Doom is this counterbalance, soothing vs. neurotic, the riff accompanies us in this trip through calmness and despair.

An ending that never seems to end, the main riff could otherwise be use as the ending of any other song, but this is just the beginning. When I listen to this song walking down the street there is a kind of background droning sound that makes me think there is something behind me. (my favorite time to listen Funeral Doom is walking while it rains), the calm places just seem to enhance the despair-filled growls that ensue, the energy level is greater and stronger, the piece ends in a slow decay at ties to the next song.

A heavy and oppressing riff that could easily compete with entry number one of this list. A long landscape that borders in Funeral Doom were not for the clean and powerful male voice.


8 Rain and Twilight Innocence - Novembers Doom

Rain is a heavy metal storm, the death growl never rests, a monster opening for The Novella Reservoir, a dense death-doom atmosphere were not for a small calm paradise in the middle of the song, that foreshadows the inclusion of Twilight Innocence, a gentle ballad amidst the brutality of the rest of the album. This is a song that I would play for the woman I marry, definitively.


7 Christian Woman - Type O Negative

In my opinion, the true spirit of doom lies in complex musical landscapes, both frantic and laconic. In this song the struggle of spirituality and carnaLity paint an internal monologue told in clean, almost sarcastic vocals and a male chorus.



6 Dying Inside - Saint Vitus

The original Doom has also addiction at its core, not only ontological depression, but the cry of an unromantic addict; the alcoholic.
The male vocals are not grandiose, but dead honest and self-deprecating.


5 Your River - My Dying Bride

The suffering you have had to bear.

Though My Dying Bride continued down the way of Gothic Metal, Turn Loose the Swans is a Doom Metal opus, a complex introduction leading to an explosive confession. The path that the clean male vocals follow are that of depression.

Following the events of last installment; the album Sabbath Bloody Sabbath was never released, thus stripping James Hetfield of one of his greatest influences, as a possible result he never answered Lars Ulrich's advertisement and Metallica would be formed with quite a different line-up
MetalMania was a heavy metal band formed in Los Angeles, California in 1981 by Drummer Lars Ulrich, Lead Guitarist Lloyd Grant, Bassist Ron McGobney and Vocalist/Rhythm guitarist Dave Mustaine.
Mustaine and Ulrich have always been the creative force behind MetalMania,. the two met after Ulrich placed an advertisement in The Recycler. Ulrich was reportedly surprised by Mustaine's expensive quitar equipment.
The band was heavily influenced by bands such as Iron Maiden and Diamond Head. Following Iron Maiden's lead, themes of science fiction and fantasy literature would be present in almost all of its releases; The Puppet Masters (1984) has its title track dedicated to the author of the homonymous novel; Robert A. Heinlein.

Its debut album; Metal Up Your Ass, was well received despite its limited initial print, its hardcore punk-like energy was noted. Its single The Mechanix would prove to be a signature in all of its live performances. This album's limited success allowed them to pursue recording a second album; Ride the Lightning.
MetalMania was recently disbanded due to Mustaine's health; seere nerve damage sustained while taking pain medication has left him unable to hold a guitar.

Speculative Fiction part 1; Black Sabbath broke up in 1973

[artist]Black Sabbath[/artist] was an influential [tag]heavy metal[/tag]/[tag]doom metal[/tag]/[tag]stoner metal [/tag]/[tag]sludge metal[/tag] band formed in 1968 as a heavy blues band originally called Earth. Its members were Ozzy Osbourne (vocals), Tony Iommi (guitar), Terence "Geezer" Butler (bass), and Bill Ward (drums).
After a string of successes such as [track artist=Black Sabbath]Paranoid[/track], [u]Walpurgis[/u], [track artist=Black Sabbath]Sweet Leaf[/track], [track artist=Black Sabbath]Behind the wall of Sleep[/track], the band was ripe with internal conflict due to substance abuse problems. While seen simply as a source of inspiration by drummer Bill Ward, the other members felt otherwise. Ward was fired from the band just after work on the band's fourth album; [track artist=Black Sabbath]Snowblind[/track]. Ward would then go on to join [artist]Rinky Dink & The Crystal[/artist]. Black Sabbath recruited Ian Paice, formerly of [artist]Deep Purple[/artist], as a replacement drummer for the [i]Snowblind[/i] world tour.

The band returned to Los Angeles to begin work on a fifth album which Tom Allom was slated to produce.They rented a house in Bel Air to begin working on new songs, but fatigue and substance abuse haunted the band once again, as well as a great disagreement on which direction the band should take. Tommi Iommi wanted to continue with the gloomy heavy metal sound he helped create while Ian Paice, with other sensibilities and Tom Meehan, the band producer, wanted them to go in a whole different direction.

"Ideas weren't coming out the way they were on Snowblind and we really got discontent" Iommi said. "Everybody was sitting there waiting for me to come up with something. I just couldn't think of anything. And if I didn't come up with anything, nobody would do anything."

In that moment Tommy Iommi left the band to return to England. While visiting a dungeon in a castle in Wales Iommi got the inspiration for the riff that would become his first hit with the band he would later found; [album artist=Black Sabbath]Seventh Star[/album], whose first album [track artist=Black Sabbath]Killing Yourself to live[/track] was a critical success.

Despite its relative short life Black Sabbath proved to be a big influence in other bands. The American band The Hands of Doom, who helped mature the sludge-doom sound in the early eighties, took their name from a Black Sabbath Song.

The Alternative to Music is Silence

You may have noticed that [tag]Alternative[/tag] is one of the most popular tags at last.fm. Also, you may have seen the proud display of Alternative Music at your local record store as well as a rich collection of Alternative Artists and labels at the iTunes store or many online music stores.

Alternative, since the early advent of [tag]grunge[/tag] (due to the mainstream success of [artist]Nirvana[/artist], [artist]Alice in Chains[/artist], [artist]Crash Test Dummies[/artist], [artist]Stone Temple Pilots[/artist] and [artist]Soundgarden[/artist]), has meant a rebellious attitude towards and a different path from mainstream [tag]pop[/tag] and [tag]rock pop[/tag], an escape from the apparent emptiness of canned entertainment and a channel of expression for young artists.

And then, after some years in the spotlight, the [tag]post grunge[/tag] sound of [artist]Matchbox Twenty[/artist], [artist]Bush[/artist] and [artist]Marcy's Playground[/artist], as well as the [tag]Britpop[/tag] tunes of [artist]Oasis[/artist] and [artist]The Cardigans[/artist] would change the panorama once again, while [artist]Radiohead[/artist], [artist]Nine Inch Nails[/artist], [artist]Tool[/artist] and others would strive while letting their music feed from [tag]electronic[/tag], [tag]industrial[/tag] and [tag]gothic rock[/tag], the sensibilities of [tag]shock rock[/tag] would return in the persona of [artist]Marilyn Manson[/artist], [artist]David Bowie[/artist] would nurture from the new sounds to create some kind of industrial glam operatic oeuvre with [album artist=David Bowie]1.Outside[/album] and the kids who grew with Nirvana would form their own bands and try to find a new sound, resulting in [tag]nü metal[/tag], [tag]metalcore[/tag], [tag]happy punk[/tag], [tag]emo[/tag] (sorry, [tag]post hardcore[/tag])

Which brings me to the next point, what do all those names I brought up have in common, if they have anything in common at all?

They are all tagged as 'Alternative'

So, in someone's list [artist]Slipknot[/artist], [artist]Placebo[/artist] and [artist]Evanescence[/artist] have the same tag, despite they have nothing in common, no common influences, no common themes, no common musical traits, "Alternative" has simply become a shelf where to dump sounds that do not belong in the other shelves. Introduce me to two people who like alternative and it's almost certain they won't like the same bands, do the experiment, try the two top listeners of the Alternative tag and see their charts, evaluate their compatibility (some applets can do that) and you will see they do not listen to the same sounds.

By contrast; try [tag]Drum and Bass[/tag] or [tag]Surf[/tag], groups under those tags have sounds, attitudes, influences and themes in common.

Tags should help you to find sounds that please you. If a tag encompasses too many different sounds it stops being useful, it becomes hit and miss. If I wanted to try a new sound based on my newfound appreciation of [artist]The Bloodhound Gang[/artist] I would be sadly disappointed if my next recommendation is [tag]Creed[/tag].

Tag your artists properly, search the Wikipedia, try the secondary tags, look a little into the band's history, create your own tags (which sounds do you think would make good [tag]ninja tunes[/tag]? )you will learn a little bit more about the music you like and you will greatly help others.
